description

Star Ocean: The First Departure is an enhanced remake of the original Star Ocean and features an entire overhaul of the original game's engine, using Star Ocean: The Second Story's engine instead with similar features, including prerendered backgrounds and 3D battle fields. Production I.G. provides new artwork and animated cutscenes for the game. New playable characters have found their way into the remake as well. There are new voice actors and extensive amounts of new, fully voiced dialogue.

96年にSFC版で発売され、SFとファンタジーを融合したストーリーが話題を集めたRPG作品。シリーズ1作目でありながら、今まで一度もリメイクされていなかった伝説のゲームが、様々な新規要素を追加して待望のフルリメイク!

Highly Worthwhile Action-RPG
The first thing I want to say is that I have never played the original Star Ocean, so I am not able to give comparisons to the original Super Famicom game. What I can say though is that from a newcomer to the series, after getting this game, I have been encouraged to get others in the series.

From what I have heard, this game was built off a modified version of Star Ocean: The Second Story for the Playstation. The PSP handles this game well; the exploration enviornments are pre-rendered and everything looks beautiful. The simple sprites fit well with their surrondings, and I probably would have never geussed this game was built from an older one had I not already known. The battle visuals aren't as up to par as the exploration areas, but still pleasing to the eye. The battle environemnts are 3D, but the characters are still sprites. It's sort of an awkward contrast between the exploration areas of the game, and the battles aren't as smooth and fluid as other action RPGS on the PSP, such as Tales of Destiny 2, but they are still fun.

The sound design is very enjoyable as well. Fans of Sakuraba Motoi will eat this game's music up. The battle sounds and dialogue are also nicely done and help bring the player down to the level of the characters.

Star Ocean: First Depature is a solid game and I plan on playing other Star Ocean games because of it.

The spiritual sequel to Tales of Phantasia
Because of some dispute, many of the original team involved in creating Tales of Phantasia (ToP) left Namco and formed Tri-Ace. Sharing many concepts with ToP, Star Ocean is undisputably its spiritual child. The PSP version is an updated remake, with features from Star Ocean 2. An old game though it is, Star Ocean is a classical RPG after all.
