Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria is set before the predecessor, when the ruined city Dipan was still a busy and prosperous city. The valkyrie Silmeria found herself taking an opposing stance against the lord of the gods, Odin and was forcibly reborn in the body of the princess of Dipan, Alicia. Unexpectedly, the spirit of Silmeria that was supposed to be sealed suddenly awakened, creating the situation of both a god and a human residing in the same body. And of course, Odin would not just sit there and do nothing, and so he sent out the leader of the 3 female gods of destiny, Ary. What lies in store for Silmeria and Alicia?

Something Different
Valkyrie Profile 2 was a game that caught me way off guard. I really had no idea what the gameplay would be like when I jumped into it, but I can say that my reaction was mostly positive. The game is very solid, offering both entertaining gameplay with very attractive visuals.

The gameplay was definitely the biggest surprise to me, especially the combat system. I must say, it was quite a bit to digest. Even after the tutorial battle, I still didn't really understand the battle system. The basics is that you have this AP meter which as you perform actions (moving, attacks, etc) it will decrease, and when it runs out, your turn is over. When you have multiple people in your party, you can either have all the characters move together or you can split them off in groups. You attack by moving next to an enemy and then pressing buttons that correspond to each party member, which results in combos. It's a little hectic, but highly satisfying.

Exploration in this game was the other thing that caught me by surprise. You move your character around the world in a side-scrolling fashion, with paths branching off either at the other end of the horizontal area or in the middle of the area (moving "up" or "north"). You also have the ability to shoot photons from your character, which you can use to freeze enemies to either avoid them or solve puzzles. While the exploration may seem like a step back to some, the game offers enough branching paths to satisfy explorers, and enough linearity for those that don't like huge, confusing dungeons/world maps.

Despite the 2D exploration, another surprise comes in the fact of how attractive the game is. The game has a very nice lighting system that makes certain areas, especially cutscenes, feel very calming. The characters have a lot of detail and it really shows in their intricate outfits. The backgrounds, especially the towns, have a lot of detail and feel very alive, making you wish you could explore them from a non-2D perspective. The sound is also very strong in this game. The soundtrack is by Sakuraba Motoi, so fans of him will definitely enjoy the music. Battle sound effects and voices are also very strong, providing emotion and making battles feel real and cutscenes feel honest.

Valkyrie Proifle 2 is a highly enjoyable game and will likely to appeal to most action-RPG fans. The battle system, while a little confusing, is very fun and satisfying. And the sound and visuals only add to experience, making the game worthwhile.

I've been a big fan of Valkyrie Profile since PSOne version. Although the story of each hero soul is not clearly told in VP2 however the gameplay and the graphics are greatly improved, cool game and must be in collection if you are a big fan of VP series.
