9 Hours, 9 People, 9 Doors

9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors is the first volume of the Zero Escape trilogy, and is part visual novel, part escape-the-room puzzle. Anything to be said about this game would be spoiling the mystery of 999. A true DS masterpiece, and still one of the best games I have ever encountered on the market. The mix of humour, visually expressive gore and mystery creates an amazing and immensely enjoyable story.
Playing blind, the true ending is unpredictable and has one of the biggest plot twists I have ever experienced in a videogame. With a large focus on science and history, everything about 999 is enthralling from start to finish.
Worth replaying more than once, and with a PC and PSVita remake on the way with full voice acting, the Zero Escape series is definitely one worth investing in.

This game marks the first entry into the Zero Escape series. It was first intended to be a standalone game, but its compelling story led to the start of a new series. The way information is conveyed in the game is a direct contrast to the last entry of the series - Zero Time Dilemma. While the last game was more cinematic in nature, 999 is a pure VN and made full use of the storytelling techniques employed by Visual Novels. It's extremely interesting to see how the series was before it slowly changed. This is the snail that affected the lives of many. I'm glad I got the chance to play 999.

Got interested in this after playing the marvellous "Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward" on PSVita, and was not disappointed. The gameplay is once again a mix of Visual Novel (pretty much just reading) and Adventure (in this case - different brainstorming puzzles). However, I would recommend this only to the fans of the genre and those eager to learn the story of the first installment of the trilogy, as by itself 999 has its drawbacks. First of all, unlike VLR, this one makes you play from the very beginning every time you get to the ending, so in NG+ some parts of the game just repeat themselves, which is annoying and tiresome. Secondly, most puzzles are rather simple and overall inferior to the ones in VLR, thus almost zero satisfaction after "solving" them . If you are not yet familiar with the series but want to, then it would probably be better to skip (at least for time) 999 and start with ZE:VLR

First game in the series. It's 50% visual novel and 50% puzzle game. The story is incredible! Many plot twists and different endings. Every character is unique. The music is top-notch too! Definitely give this game a try.
