The young kid Max is disillusioned when his family gets into their usual arguments over the Christmas holidays. And because he decides to turn his back on Santa Claus, the lack of festive spirit unleashes an ancient evil upon them. Max’s wise old grandmother Omi recounts the legend of Krampus, the demonic counterpart to Saint Nicholas, whose purpose is to curse, punish and torture everyone on the naughty list.

Attacked by teddy bears turned evil, besieged by demonic elves and threatened by monstrous snowmen, the family must either get over their differences and stick together or die a horrible death at the hands of evil anti-Santa Claus and his minions.

Directed by Michael Dougherty with 1984’s “Gremlins” as the obvious inspiration, “Krampus” isn’t especially terrifying with its PG-13 violence. But it isn't a children's movie, let alone a family movie either. It rather is a ho-ho-horror-comedy hybrid that generates its own charm by using mostly practical effects for its creatures which are genuinely creepy.
