Great solution to not buying a New 3DS
Finally the NFC reader for 3DS is here. With Amiibo being a very profitable item for Nintendo and more and more 3DS having Amiibo integration it's good to see that Nintendo finally released this so people don't have to replace their loved 3DS/3DS LL/2DS with a New 3DS/3DS LL just to use their Amiibos in game.
The device is small with a very clean design and runs on 2 AA batteries. It connects to the console with the infra red port. The Amiibo settings are already in the latest firmware so just make sure you upgrade your 3DS firmware if you haven't for a while. I like the little touches that Nintendo have included like a notification sound when the 3DS see the NFC reader even without an Amiibo being placed on it.
The furthest range from the console is listed in the manual as about 20cm but I've been able to use it further away.
Also the NFC reader is stronger than the one in the Wii U pad and will pick up an Amiibo if it's placed above the unit to a range of about 4cm. The Wii U is about 3cm and the New 3DS is about 1cm. Meaning that unlike the New 3DS, you can use Amiibo in box if you remove the silver foil from under the Amiibo.
Necessary if you plan to get Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer, Super Smash Bros and don't want to buy a new console.
