Katsushi Murakami is considered to be one of the grandmasters of Japanese mecha design. His long career spans such milestones as Super Dimensional Fortress Macross II: The Movie, Space Adventure Cobra or 3x3 Eyes when he worked for Bandai. Outside of anime, he worked as a designer for the Power Rangers and Kamen Rider franchise and the Japanese Spider-Man amongst others.
Originally trained as an industrial designer, he started designing for the TV series "Inazuman". In it, his earliest design was the flying car "Raijin-gō". Later, he played a central role in the Raideen production where he oversaw the design of the titular robot and made sure that the on-screen design matched with the produced toy so that transformations were technically accurate in both iterations.
This was a first in robot anime and gave the series a unique selling point. During the robot anime era, Murakami worked closely with Studio Nue and Yasuhiko Yoshikazu. It was an unusual collaboration between an industrial designer, a pair of sci-fi visualizes, and a character designer and became extremely successful during that era. It was a watershed moment for the genre and would establish that the business model for creating televised anime productions would center on toy companies.
