Released in theaters in 2004, "Steamboy" was the first feature-length animated film since "Akira," conceived, written, and directed by Katsuhiro Otomo. From conception to release, the film took a decade to produce, and this book is the second of two volumes that compile the extensive storyboards by Otomo himself. At the time of the film's release, the Young Magazine editorial department published a single volume, "Steamboy Storyboard Collection," but it has since become a premium book. This time, it has been reprinted in two volumes, expanded from its original A5 size to the size of Otomo's complete works. In addition to the latter half of the film, which consists of six parts (A, B, C, D, E1, and E2), this volume also includes storyboards from alternate versions and the pilot film. Additionally, approximately 60 pages of previously unreleased and never-before-published storyboard sketches have been added, bringing this volume to nearly 500 pages. The author's latest commentary is also included at the end of the book. As you can see from the previous volume of this book and the collection of storyboards for "AKIRA," the author's storyboards are by no means rough, but are extremely detailed and full of information, including the settings, making them a "work" that is well worth reading on its own. This book is not only a resource that sheds light on the structure of the animation known as "STEAMBOY," but can also be said to be another main part of "STEAMBOY" that can be read in paper form.
