Originally aired in January 1996, The Secret Service featured an anime-original story created exclusively for the animated version of City Hunter, rather than adapting content directly from the manga. The special continued the adventures of Ryo Saeba in an all-new mission, expanding the world of the beloved franchise beyond the television series.

The soundtrack features music composed by Tatsumi Yano, whose work helped define the sound of numerous City Hunter productions.
