Deep Fear, by Sega for Sega Saturn
An admirable effort on Segas part, capturing the feel and eerry atmosphere of being trapped thousands of feet below the ocean surface facing uncertain death at the hands of your former freinds and crewmates, and the dwindling oxygen supply, transformed into mindless creatures bent on your destruction. Deep Fear though borrowing fromn the RE series, does make a stand on it\'s own merits, extensive FMV cinemas(it takes something to have 4 CD Saturn game), move and shoot vs stand and fire(RE), the Japanese release has English language voice actors for easy importing, the music is scored by the same guy who scored Ghost in the Shell and other notable animes, just to name a few points. You\'re stationed on a deep sea research platform, on security detail, when a regularly scheduled mission of the bases sub goes wrong and the sub crashes into the bases main oxygen plant, triggering mass shut down of air supplies throughout the base, this becomes gameplay device where at times when you enter an area a counter begins showing how much longer the local air supply will last for, this put\'s you in the position of having to reach the nearest air supply charging station in time to replenish the air and end the timer(note : these serve as save points also), at times you might need to quickly dispatch an enemy or 2 to clear the way to the air station. The games sound effects were a bit weak, though some of the atmospherics make up for the cheesy repetitive grunts and groans of your zombie victims and weak gun shot effects. Visually, it is a Saturn game, while the background prerenders are good overall(when they aren\'t repetitive), the 3D character renders do display the Saturns characteristic weak 3D engine. Gameplay was good, once getting used to the character oriented absolute control scheme(if he\'s facing you up on the control pad still will make him walk towards you. Overal a decent game Highly reccommended.
