Item Description

Celebrating the '20th Anniversary of Dengeki Bunko' French Bread (UNIBEL, Melty Blood), along with the Sega and ASCII Media Works, are bringing us another exciting 2D fighter straight from the arcade to our Sony consoles! The title will include characters from Dengeki Bunko's extensive line of light novels such as Sword Art Online, Shakugan no Shana, and Durarara! going toe-to-toe on stages based on Sega franchises. Expect to see even more of your favorite characters sprinkled in amongst the roster as we get closer to release!

Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax gameplay will feel familiar to any fan of anime/2D fighting games. The game uses a standard eight-way joystick and four buttons: A (weak attack), B (medium attack), C (strong attack), and D (support, to summon support characters) as well as standard dash, back dash, and two levels of jump - and of course the available combos. The console version will be shipping with "Dream Duel" mode which allows players to enjoy conversation events between the characters, online "Network" mode, as well as unlockable extras like costume colors, themes, and individual illustrations and animations for characters!

Good game!
Great fighting game, but has a small plot.

Better than expected
Wide cast of characters to pick from though I'm alittle upset of some characters being support only. Actually gameplay is nice though.

Cool characters from memorable Light Novel worlds collide and very little else!
Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax gathers all of the coolest fighters from some of the most popular light novel series into a world in other to fight each other to the bitter end. While that sounds highly appealing to fans of both anime/manga/LN and fighting games, the scales this time are tipped rather heavily on the fighting game fans' side. While there was fantastic potential for a cool story mode, it would be incorrect to say that this game has a satisfying plot.

What it does have is a relatively simple arcade mode which sets you up against a preset number of opponents, all sharing pretty much the same lines and very slightly altering the incredibly mundane story from one character to another. What makes up for this somewhat is the "Dream Duel" mode, where each character has 6 fights against set opponents. These fights are preceded by a short conversation, some only 5-6 lines, but others going up to about 15 lines back and forth between characters. This is what brings out the best in the story- the way these characters, some radically different from others, interact with each other.

On the other side of the spectrum is the gameplay. While I'd like to say I'm a professional fighting game player, I'm actually a complete newcomer the genre, having only played the BlazBlue and Persona 4 Arena series before hand, both of them featuring autocombos. I am therefore glad to say that this game also contains autocombos, something I highly relied on for a large bulk of my damage.

However, unlike the aforementioned two series, there were surprisingly many different options provided to me by the game to mix up from the usual autocombos. There are nice, easily executable throws, specials easily accessible after using your Blast move, and for many characters, incredibly powerful Trump Card moves that give you the edge in battle.

The game also offers a huge host of recognisable characters from equally and less popular light novel series as "assist" characters. These can be summoned repeatedly in battle to carry out one of two different possible actions. While this is initially very cool, for me at the least, certain assists have a definite edge against the rest, with Accelerator, Kino and Izaya seeming to be highly effective in recharge time and power output, and many others lagging behind.

I'm sure that for a fighting game fan this is an alright game. I'm sure that it's the best game ever for a light novel loving fighting game fan. However, as just a light novel fan, this game is not suitable for play in the same way that Persona 4 Arena was for Persona 4 fans. While I was looking forward to playing this game, I can't say that I'm all that impressed with it. It'll do, and not much more else above and beyond.
