Once again, Japanese crossover/fusion is hot!
As a development of, or spin-off phenomenon from, the global boom in the reappraisal of city pop, Japanese fusion has surged rapidly since around last year. Japan's pride, trumpet player Hinoteru (Terumasa Hino) released this as his first album after moving to the emerging label Who-Ring under Toshiba EMI (now Universal Music). He brings in Lara, who provided a major hit for Whitney Houston, as producer (on four tracks), and tries a danceable urban contemporary sound originating from New York that was at the cutting edge at the time. There are also vocal tracks led by Lara, making this the most approachable release in Hinoteru's long career and a work that pop fans can also enjoy together. At the same time, Hino's cornet and flugelhorn interwoven with the chorus are also compelling, leaving a lasting impression with their glossy tone. Now that 1980s sounds are being reappraised, this is an album worth revisiting.
