Item Description

Half a century after the Red Faction resistance and their Marauder allies freed Mars from the brutal Earth Defense Force, harmony on Mars is again threatened but this time by a lethal force shrouded in mystery. When the massive Terraformer that supplies Mars with its Earth-like air and weather is destroyed, the atmosphere turns to chaos, super-tornados and lightning storms engulf the planet. To survive, the Colonists flee to the underground mines and build a network of habitable caves.Five years later, Darius Mason, grandson of Martian Revolution heroes Alec Mason and Samanya, runs a lucrative business from Bastion, underground hub of Colonist activity. Mining, scavenging, mercenary work--if the job is dangerous, Darius is your man. Few sane people now venture to the ravaged surface, aside from contractors like Darius and the smugglers who run goods between the settlements. When Darius is tricked into reopening a mysterious shaft in an old Marauder temple, he releases a long-dormant evil and unleashes Armageddon on Mars. As Colonist and Marauder settlements are torn asunder, only Darius and the Red Faction can save mankind. The battle will take them across the storm-blasted planet--and below it, to the very heart of the unspeakable threat.

Bit of a shame
Since I was a BIG-big fan of the series and especially the one before this one, where you can drive around like it's Grand Theft Total Recall ("Quade..! quade..!") and smash up everything. This game is more of the same, but cooler intermissions, but it's not free roam anymore, just linear shooting in caves. So there are no more flat builings that you can bring down in game. There is a destruction/challenge mode, where you can have a lot of fun, but without the civilians and/or bad guys, there is little fun to be had, if you ask me. I played it intensivly for a week, but after that i never finished it. Good thing play-asia had it for a cheap price ;)

The Red Faction pattern
If you're a fan, you've already decided to buy it. And if you're a fan, you'll find an interesting pattern emerging.
The original Red Faction, while linear, allowed an amazing aount of flexibility to play with its Geo-Mod. The second was tighter, more refined and the Geo-Mod worked better, but the game really restricted the player's ability to play with the tech. Guerilla's Geo-Mod 2.0 didn't actually modify the geometry, but worked brilliantly in terms of weight, materials and physics. And it was an open world!
In keeping with the series' "great freedom with great tech", followed by a "better looking, better working but ultimately limiting" follow-up, you'll enjoy a great shooter, but won't spend the time you did with the last, tearing skyskrapers down piece by piece
