"Angel's Egg" is an animated film conceived, scripted, and directed by Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell) with original concept and art direction by Yoshitaka Amano (Final Fantasy series). The definitive book, "The Art of Angel's Egg" (first published in 1986, expanded and revised edition first published in 2004), which contains original illustrations, filmmaking, and image boards that condense the film's worldview, is finally being reprinted in a long-awaited reprint.
Released as an OVA in 1985, "Angel's Egg" is a legendary work in which the genius Mamoru Oshii, who has overturned conventional wisdom in anime and film with each of his works, including Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer, Ghost in the Shell, and Innocence, created a fantastical, otherworldly world, working with Yoshitaka Amano, who would later become a world-renowned illustrator. With its nearly monotone colors, minimal dialogue, unusually long takes, and only about 400 cuts, roughly one-third the number of cuts found in a typical animation, the entire film is constructed in this ascetic style, deeply reflecting the underlying theme of "skepticism about one's own existence" that runs through all of Oshii's work. As Mamoru Oshii's first original work, there's no doubt that it marks an important milestone as the starting point of his career as an artist.
In 2025, the 40th anniversary of the film's release, the announcement of the production of a 4K remaster of Angel's Egg sparked excitement not only in Japan but around the world. Furthermore, its selection at international film festivals such as the Cannes Film Festival and the Annecy International Animated Film Festival has led to a renewed appreciation of the film 40 years later.
And now, this long-awaited reprint is once again available to fans.
