I should try the Japanese version
This version has very limited story which is kinda of let down for a JRPG normally, though that is supposedly common for the Metal Max franchise titles and I do know that there is a little more story in the Japanese M rated version (this release got censored for some reason and rated T). It offers a "sandbox" experience but it feels a little too aimless without much going besides beating monsters and the final boss after you have gathered a crew together (needed more towns with NPC people to interact with).

Now that said while not for everyone this game is a pretty dang fun Turn Based RPG game play wise. The tank customization is really excellent with hundreds if not thousands of combinations to play with. You can shoot opponents before entering combat so as you upgrade your tank after awhile it almost feels an action RPG but with menus. Also this game while a little on the short side has what I like call "infinite replay value", you keep your tanks, levels, party, items and upgrades after each "play through" if you can call it that when you defeat the final boss or go through a character's "dating" arch, and bosses regenerate so you well never run out of rare materials for crafting and you do want to re-fight the bosses to keep the Doomsday clock down. You can also readjust your character builds if you don't like how skill treed them.

A bit bland
I'm having fun with it but the game is pretty bland like there's really no story in this game and the NPCs are kinda...there, a bit dissapointing, really.

good but i expected better
The game is very good, but I certainly expected something more from it.
