Set in the year 2039, the game takes place several years after the events of Metro Exodus. The Moscow Metro is once again humanity’s primary refuge after nuclear devastation, but the once‑fractured underground factions have now been forcibly unified under a brutal authoritarian regime known as the Novoreich. This regime is led by Hunter, a legendary Spartan who rules through propaganda, fear, and violence, promising salvation while tightening his grip on the populace.
Players assume the role of The Stranger, a new, fully voiced protagonist and a reclusive exile haunted by violent nightmares and memories of the past. Drawn back into the Metro against his will, The Stranger must confront both external horrors—mutants, oppressive regimes, and human cruelty—and his own fractured psyche. The narrative heavily emphasizes themes of tyranny, silence, freedom, and the moral cost of survival, shaped in part by the real‑world experiences of the Ukrainian‑based development team and series author Dmitry Glukhovsky.
