Silver Axe is a Great Little Metroidvania
Silver Axe is a cute little Metroidvania that is based on a fable called The Honest Woodcutter.
The story is very good and the graphics suit the story book aesthetic I think the developers were going for.
You start off with the usual basic moves and gain more as you progress. Silver Axe has some excellent original ideas that I hope more Metroidvania's use. You can tackle the area boss straight away but be warned, they are hard. So when you do eventually die the local wild life offer you quests to help them and in return they will help you with the boss. It is a very cool take on the usual MV format. The other original idea the game has is that you can do magic spells using the right stick .These start off very basic and require you to do inputs of up, left, right and down, each input corresponding to either earth, wind, fire or thunder. Your early spells only require 3 inputs and are very easy to pull off but as you upgrade the axe you gain more spells requiring more complex inputs. Thankfully you can assign the harder inputs to the D Pad allowing for quick and easy use. These harder spells can only be used after you use one of the basic spells to start with so you end up stacking spells.
Combining different elements also opens up different more stronger spells, something you will need to learn to beat the later bosses. It is a very cool concept and is almost like playing a fighting game, adding to this is the excellent Hollow Knight basic moves that really make you feel powerful as you cast spells whilst jumping around slicing and dicing.
Great game.
