Kumitantei™: Old‑School Slaughter is an episodic murder‑mystery adventure developed by Mango Factory and published by Akupara Games.Inspired by classic Japanese visual novels and retro anime of the 1980s, the game fuses investigation gameplay, visual novel storytelling, and strategic card battles into a distinctive killing‑game experience.
Set in an alternate‑history 1989 Japan, the story follows the Absolute Class of ’89, sixteen elite students unlawfully trapped inside a decaying underground bunker. Forced into a twisted Apathy Experiment, the students must commit murder—or expose it—to survive. Every case pushes characters to their moral limits, where uncovering the truth is the only way to avoid collective execution.
Gameplay blends multiple systems into a cohesive mystery experience. Players investigate crime scenes, gather evidence, and speak with classmates to uncover contradictions. Social interactions are just as important as sleuthing—bonding with classmates unlocks powerful cards used during debates and trials. These cards form the foundation of a deck‑building system that determines how effectively players dismantle lies and dominate courtroom confrontations.
Trials take the form of intense ADV‑style card battles, inspired by Danganronpa and Ace Attorney. Players must carefully manage their decks, respond to enemy arguments, and chain abilities together to expose murderers before time runs out. Making the wrong accusation—or failing to present convincing evidence—can result in catastrophic consequences for the entire class.
Between investigations and trials, Kumitantei™: Old‑School Slaughter features a variety of retro arcade‑style mini‑games, paying homage to classic ’80s gaming culture. Visually, the game draws inspiration from anime such as Urusei Yatsura, combining expressive character art, dark humor, and unsettling psychological tension. The episodic structure allows the story to escalate over multiple cases, with new episodes expanding both narrative and gameplay systems.
Designed as a single‑player experience, the game emphasizes player choice, moral ambiguity, and deduction. With multiple endings, dark humor, and layered mysteries, Kumitantei™: Old‑School Slaughter delivers a nostalgic yet modern take on the killing‑game genre—where survival truly is in the cards.
