Madhouse, one of Japan's foremost animation studios ("The Girl Who Leapt Through Time," "Paprika") put together her imaginative schoolgirl era with gifted director Sunao Katabuchi (acclaimed director of TV animation series "Black Lagoon", and assistant director of "Kiki's Delivery Service"), who studied under Hayao Miyazaki, into a beautiful and energetic animated film. Not for small children

Not because of any negative effect it could instill on small children but it would be hard to instill nostalgic feelings in them. Adults on the other hand would enjoy more if not for the kiddy style story telling.

Beautiful film

A very sweet film that echoes elements of My Neighbour Totoro and Only Yesterday. The premise is the familiar tale of childhood friendship, but I found the best parts of the film in the little details. Stopping at the level crossing to hear the vibration of a distant train through the tracks. Considering a box of coloured pencils a luxury in post-war Japan. Swimming through a rice field as though it were a lake. Recommended.

Wonderful animation, and fantastic story.... but I sort of got annoyed with our local movie rental place as the person recommended this film for small children.
