description

Toono Sayo is a beautiful girl that lives with her older brother, Toono Touya, who is an author. Her brother tells her about his next story: ‘Shinigami to Shoujo’. He explains that it will be about a lonely shinigami and a girl, and their search for the most beautiful word that exists.

One day, when Sayo looked up at a clock tower that has long ceased to move, she met a man wearing strange white clothes. When she asked him who he is and why he is wearing such weird clothes, he told her that he has no memory of his identity and that the only thing he knows is that he is a shinigami. Sayo suggests that if he does not know his name, she'll give him one and named him ‘Ao’ (blue) after how similar the man’s eyes are to the color of the sky.

A Truly Satisfying Game
5 stars aren't enough to express how much I enjoyed this game. First, I loved how you get to see the story from Sayo's viewpoint without being fully connected to her thoughts. And at certain times, you even get to switch to another character's viewpoint to see what he or she is doing in relation to Sayo.

You truly get the feeling that you are reading a storybook as you play through the game. Each chapter focuses on a certain character in the game. If you are aiming for someone other than Tooya or Ao, the game will conclude on his chapter. For Tooya and Ao, you play through the very last chapter. After you complete each of a character's multiple endings, you get a different epilogue. It can be quite challenging to find all of the endings, so I recommend using an online walkthrough.

The music in this game is absolutely beautiful. It's one of those games where you want to own the soundtrack and listen to it over and over. The music fits the different scenarios in the game perfectly and do a great job of reflecting the mood of each situation Sayo faces.

As for the artwork, I would rank it right up with the music. I had fun collecting all of the images and I wish they had included a snapshot feature so that I could have saved images from the regular gameplay as well.

In order to encounter all of the scenes in this game, you will need to make use of the Kotonoha system. After you complete each character's paths, you will receive hints on how to access the missing scenes. Like I recommended before, don't hesitate to search the internet if you're missing some scenes since some are not that obvious even with hints.

Lastly, the voice cast for this game is fantastic. Even when one person had to voice a few characters, he/she disguised his/her voice well enough where it wasn't too noticeable. I especially liked how Ueda Kana voiced Sayo in the opening and ending chapters. It really drove home that you are more of the reader than the heroine in the game.

All in all, this was an imaginative storybook that kept me interested from start to finish. I couldn't wait to keep playing the game so that I could learn about each character's predicament. If you've been looking for something a bit different than the usual 'let's snag a harem of handsome guys' otome game, then I highly recommend this game.
