Genji Monogatari or the “The Story of Genji” is a book written by the poet Murasaki Shikibu about the life of the emperor Hikaru Genji, his child Kaoru, the romance in court in the Heian period as well as political intrigue. This novel is regarded as a classic held in high regard not only within Japan, but throughout the world.
The novel consists of around a thousand poems and the work is translated by Yosano Akiko, a well known poet and scholar herself in the contemporary times.
